BEIJING (AP) — China is seeking to have U.S. courts review its bid to take over land held by Taiwan’s L’Oreal Cosmetics Inc., but so far a lawyer for Taiwan’s government says there is no immediate plan to do so.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on Saturday rejected the U.S. government’s request to take control of Tielan Island and other parts of the former landlocked island, which was administered by China. Beijing plans to spend $500 million over the next decade to develop Tielan, a key oil drilling site, Chinese media have reported.
The United States has said the land is part of its sovereign territory and is not under its jurisdiction. However, Beijing says Taiwan is taking charge of the area, which is already held by Japan.
Taiwan’s prime minister says he hopes for the court’s review. The issue is expected to be brought before the U.N. General Assembly for consideration in September.
Chinese officials, led by President Xi Jinping, have been courting the United States at a time when Beijing has been clamping down on dissent across the West.
